HISTORY OF THE MARONITE SISTERS OF THE HOLY FAMILY VILLAGE
( Aged Care )
On 30 August 1991, the Sisters purchased an existing nursing home of 27 beds at Dulwich Hill and renamed it 'The Alexander and Therese Alam Retirement Complex'. However the nursing home needed not only physical improvement but a higher level of care to provide a superior standard for residents.
From the time the nursing home was purchased, there were ideas and plans worked on and carried through by the Sisters of the Holy Family to try and achieve a more suitable accommodation that would meet all government standards and regulations. After tireless work and many meetings with different architects, builders, council and government bodies, plans were put to Marrickville council in order to provide a new 50 bed nursing home in different grounds to the existing. Once approved, the nursing home relocated from a noisy, busy main street to a quieter surrounding with a more serene environment. This new building (now named "The Maronite Sisters of the Holy Family Village") was constructed adhering strictly to the appropriate sections of the Australian standards and the building code of Australia. Throughout the reconstruction in 1997, the NSW Health Department kept a monitor through Ms Fefe Lawson, which wrote in December 1997 "….in congratulation the Maronite Sisters of the Holy Family for providing such a modern and well equipped facility for aged care…."
While physical improvement was under way, resident facilities/services and staff were not forgotten. When the official opening of the new Village in February 1998 occurred, both staff and residents welcomed their new home. In order to provide an easier, less stressed time for residents the premises adopted all the comforts of home and more. Providing such things as, non-slip floors, soft lighting, lockable bedside cupboards and drawers, electric beds, outlets for all services ie: TV, telephone, anti-fire curtains and bedspreads, personal laundry facilities, air conditioning, comfortable furniture, en-suite toilets which have been designed especially for the elderly and of upmost importance, privacy, with rooms being one or two beds only.
Staff and residents were treated as new, providing them with in-services, meetings, orientation and induction into all areas of OH&S, fire safety, infection control and were provided with a new office administration system which was obsolete in the old premises.
Through the years continuous improvement by management was always of extreme importance. Where seeing a goal for improvement was achieved by working with staff, residents and relatives through such things as surveys, questionnaires, statistics, checklists, personal communication, both staff and residents/relatives meetings. As well as collating this information, the management sought professional services to improve and update their policies, procedures and practices. All of which are updated on a regular basis and are on hand for staff to adhere to and refer to at all times. In addition a wide range of both outdoor and indoor activities are available to keep our residents occupied, independent and happy.
The home proudly stands in the middle of a beautiful garden that provides parking facilities for relatives and friends and a gardener who maintains the surroundings. It also has services like electrical gates, special waste management room, large TV/dining room, a room especially designed to cater for family visits and gatherings, a hairdresser/podiatry room and a chapel.
The Maronite Sisters of the Holy Family Village exists as a whole community. Believing that a high standard and successful nursing home can only thrive if all work together for the benefit of the residents. All this focus is to ensure that our residents live a dignified, secure and rewarding life sharing experiences and memories with friends in the same environment.
